Who we assess
We see children, young people and adults who may have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
We are a National NHS Clinic and accept referrals from across the UK.
Referral criteria
To be considered for an assessment:
- There should be confirmed or strongly suspected alcohol exposure during pregnancy
- The person being referred must be 6 years old or over
- Funding arrangements must be in place. Funding arrangements vary depending on local arrangements. We recommend contacting our team at FASDadminteam@sabp.nhs.uk to confirm the right funding process for your area.
Who can refer
Referrals are accepted from NHS professionals such as:
- Paediatricians
- CAMHS professionals
- Neurodevelopmental teams
- GPs
- Other healthcare professionals.
We are not able to accept self-referrals.
What to include in a referral
Please provide as much of the following as possible:
Consent and understanding
- For children, identify who has parental responsibility and gain their consent. As a national service, we may not have access to local patient records. So if anything changes after referral, such as parental responsibility or contact details, we must be kept informed. This helps us communicate effectively and provide the best possible support
- For adults, gain consent from the person being referred
- If developmentally and age appropriate, ensure the person being referred is aware of and agrees to the referral.
Background
- Health and social care history of the birth parents (if known)
- Information on alcohol and/or drug use before, during, and after pregnancy
- Details from child permanence reports or social work records (if the person is adopted or in care).
Medical history
- Birth details: antenatal care, gestation, birth complications, genetic conditions
- Other medical history (e.g. epilepsy, growth difficulties)
- Medication.
Current difficulties
- Learning, attention, language, memory, executive functioning, motor, and sensory
- Organisational, behavioural, emotional, or social challenges
- Any known diagnoses or concerns (e.g. Autism, ADHD)
- Any other concerns.
Previous assessments
- Reports or outcomes from past assessments (e.g. cognitive testing, neurodevelopmental reports).
Care history
- Whether the person is or was in care
- Number of placements
- Whether a social worker is currently involved
